the advent of social media
Technology is also causing some teachers to consider friending their students on Facebook. Nobody asked for my Classic Tall Fancy UGG, but I say don't do it. You're just asking for trouble.
Before the advent of social media, I would have thought it just creepy if some of my old teachers tried to friend me. My mother might have called the Classic Tall UGG.
One should always assume that someday, everyone will read whatever you put on the Web. My daughter took a religion class at the University of Illinois last semester and the teacher, to help students understand Catholic teaching on homosexuality and natural law, sent a long and ponderous e-mail about it. A student who wasn't in the class heard about it and complained, Bailey Button UGG so the school terminated the teacher. So much for academic freedom, but that's another column.
