Touted as much more than just a street festival, organizers say the annual event draws 40,000 to 60,000 people Saturday and Sunday who want to enjoy the activities and the beach. "We believe we made a good move when we made some changes," said Debbie Allen, chairwoman of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, which spearheads the event along with a pack of local sponsors. "People enjoy this setup, being closer to the beach."

Harbor Days brought in 210 vendors, compared with about 180 in previous years.

"We have more vendors and a better space," Allen said. "The pirate theme is something we did in 2007 and 2008; it always brings a lot of families out."

Ginger Costa-Jackson, dressed in black and moving alongside the puppet, gave voice to Puss with her silvery and dark-hued mezzo-soprano, which she wielded with feline flair.
